Separate medical from cancellation risks

Travel health insurance addresses medical costs during covered trips. Cancellation or interruption insurance addresses specified reasons for cancelling or cutting short a trip. Baggage cover addresses different events again.

Check where and how long you travel

Territory, trip-length limits, cruises, winter sports, business travel and long stays can affect suitability. Annual cover may be efficient for frequent travellers but still imposes maximum trip durations.

Existing cover can overlap

Credit cards, statutory health cover and private health insurance may already provide some travel benefits. Check the gaps before paying twice for the same risk.

Repatriation wording matters

Look at whether repatriation is covered when medically necessary or when medically reasonable, as wording can change how broadly the benefit applies.

Match travel cover to the trip

A weekend in another EU country and a multi-month journey outside Europe create different risks. Check destination, trip duration, medical-cost limits, repatriation wording, cancellation cover and exclusions for activities you actually plan to do. Annual policies can be convenient, but they may still impose a maximum duration for each individual trip.

Check what your existing cover already provides

Before buying another policy, review any protection from statutory or private health insurance, a credit card, employer travel programme or existing annual policy. Overlap is not automatically harmful, but duplicated benefits can make it harder to understand which provider should handle a claim.

Keep evidence while travelling

Match cover to the actual trip

A weekend inside Europe, a long-haul holiday and a multi-month stay can require different protection. Check destination, trip length, activities, age restrictions, pre-existing-condition wording and the maximum duration permitted for each journey.

Medical treatment and cancellation are separate questions

Travel medical insurance, trip cancellation and baggage cover solve different problems. Do not assume one benefit includes the others. For expensive travel, compare cancellation triggers and maximum reimbursement; for medical cover, check emergency assistance, direct billing where available and repatriation conditions.
