Why liability can be financially significant
If you negligently injure someone or damage their property, personal liability can create large claims. A private liability policy is designed to respond to covered third-party claims and can also defend against unjustified claims.
Household scope
Check whether a policy covers only one person, a couple or a family, and how children, pets, rented property and volunteering are treated. Definitions differ by insurer.
Coverage limits and exclusions
A high limit can matter for serious injury claims, but exclusions are equally important. Intentional acts are not normally insured, and professional or motor risks generally need separate policies.
International residents
Check worldwide cover, duration limits abroad and whether key documents and claims support are available in a language you understand.
Look at the liability situations you actually have
Personal liability cover is easier to compare when you start with real situations: renting a home, cycling, looking after someone else’s property, having children, keeping pets or spending time abroad. Not every circumstance is handled identically, so a generic “covered” label is less useful than checking the wording that applies to your household.
Read exclusions before limits
A high headline limit can be reassuring, but exclusions and sub-limits determine whether a particular event is protected. Check who counts as an insured person, how accidental damage to rented property is treated, whether gradual damage is excluded and what happens when another person claims against you.
Comparison questions
- Who in the household is insured?
- Are rented-property losses included?
- What territorial limits apply outside Germany?
- Are keys, voluntary assistance or borrowed items addressed?
- How does the insurer handle defence against an unjustified claim?
Focus on severe losses, not small claims
Personal liability insurance is designed around liability claims that can be financially significant. When comparing policies, review the overall limit, who in the household is insured, treatment of rented property, damage caused by children where relevant, and exclusions that could affect common activities.
Check the claim process before you need it
A useful policy is not only about the headline limit. Review how a claim must be reported, what evidence is requested, whether the insurer also assesses and rejects unjustified claims, and what duties you have after an incident. Keep photographs, correspondence and witness details when appropriate.
