Why a single “average price” can mislead

Statutory and private insurance use different pricing logic. GKV contributions are linked to income and regulatory rules, while PKV premiums are tariff- and risk-based. A figure that is correct for one person can therefore be irrelevant for another.

Factors for statutory cover

Income, employment status, the insurer’s supplementary contribution and eligibility for family co-insurance can affect household cost. Contribution ceilings and thresholds are updated, so check current official figures for the year in question.

Factors for private cover

Age at entry, health assessment, deductible, benefit level and tariff design can influence the premium. Consider expected changes over many years instead of only the first-year price.

Compare total value

Look at benefits, co-payments, family implications and administrative burden alongside the monthly cost. Premium alone is not a sufficient measure of value.

Separate the headline contribution from the total cost

A useful cost comparison starts by identifying what is included, what is paid separately and which amounts can vary later. For any option, record the recurring contribution, deductible, predictable co-payments and services you expect to use. This avoids comparing one headline number with another plan that bundles costs differently.

Use scenarios instead of one estimate

Create at least three scenarios: low healthcare use, typical use and a year with substantial care. The purpose is not to predict medical needs but to understand which costs are fixed and which are variable. If one option only looks attractive under a very narrow scenario, that is useful information before committing.

Questions to document

Build a cost comparison that survives renewal

A useful comparison separates fixed recurring contributions from amounts you may pay when care is used. Record deductibles, co-payments, excluded services and any family-related implications. This creates a total-cost view instead of treating the monthly premium as the whole price.

Recheck assumptions when your situation changes

Employment, income, family circumstances, residence status and eligibility can change the available routes or the amount you pay. Revisit the comparison after a significant life change and use current official figures rather than an old article or quotation.
